I have just returned from my Christmas vacation in Florida. One day, I took a short stroll on the beach, only to be flabbergasted by how much plastic I found. This beach is not even know for plastic like many beaches now. There are a bunch of buoys in the picture. It's crab season in Florida, and the horizon is dotted with colors. There are two food wrappers. I believe that's just lazy people. Two bottle caps. A plastic bag. A chap-stick. A "Capri-Sun" bag. Here is the picture.

Hi!

Okay, this is amazing! There was an "ice" skating rink in a mall in Florida. Really it was a plastic skating rink! A whole rink made out of plastic. I actually skated on it. It's a lot harder to skate on than ice. I figure they had to use it so the poor Floridians didn't have to freeze! But still, so much plastic going to waste. If they reuse it, maybe it wouldn't be so incredibly terrible!

Hi!

I went to a sleepover and we did a ton of crafts. Problem was, all the materials were covered in plastic. To top it off, they were made out of foam. I wanted to not do them, but what could I do, embarrass the host? I did them figuring I could give them to a friend or family member who would actually use it. There were foam things telling how much snow had fallen, make your own snow globes, foam thermometer bases, beads covered in plastic, and more.

Hi!

My mom and I had so much fun the other day. We realized just how much plastic we waste with chap-stick. So, we took coconut oil, added oils and put it in metal molds. We would have added food coloring also, but we could not find it. It has a magnet on the back of the metal holder, so I can put in my locker at school. It's really not very good, we need to add wax and stuff, but it works. It also melts really easily.

Hi!

I was my science olympiad meeting and someone brought pop. I have no will power when it comes to carbonation. We had to use plastic cups. As first, I rebelled! How could I just give in that easily? But, as soon as I heard were we going to use the same ones every week, I felt better. Not completely better, but better. Should I really be trying to justify my plastic use to avoid my guilt? Is that okay? Oh well, it's the best I can do right now.

YAY!

I have finally gotten my Thinksound earbuds! They use no new plastic except for a tiny bit on the packaging. They are beautiful. I lost my old ones so my mom said I could get these fro a Christmas present. They are a little pricey. Well worth it, though. My recycled bag is slowly taking shape. It really is pretty. It looks like a rainbow. I will put a picture of my new earbuds!!!

Happy Thanksgiving!

We celebrated my mother's birthday yesterday. I made her a gift with no plastic. I made her earrings made with my old earring backs. On the bottom I made purple (her favorite color) hearts. They were pretty. I put the earrings in a beautiful, heart shaped, mother of pearl case. I'll post a picture when I get a chance. I think hand-made gifts are always the best not only because they use almost no plastic, but also because it was a gift of that person's time.

Hi! I just made some really cool ornaments for our Christmas tree. I made them out of clay because all the pre-packaged ones were wrapped in plastic. Some were even double wrapped! So my mom and I decided to make our own. My sister even helped. I made sweets like pies, cakes, lollipops, and gingerbread men out of the clay. We are baking them now. I hope to post pictures of them soon!

I just watched the most amazing show about plastic. It talked about the Pacific gyre, plastic beaches, and, of course, landfills. It talked about recycling, too. It's astonishing, they even went into a factory that chopped water bottles up, melted them and made clothes, rugs, etc. You name it, they made it. It also talked about China's major waste problem. All the landfills are at capacity and there's no where to put it. As for my life, I received high honors and outstanding effort for the first quarter!

Water bottles disgust me! Why do we need disposable bottles when we have perfectly nice reusable water bottles? And even better, if you're going somewhere with a water fountain, just use that! I have a very nice metal water bottle I take wherever I go that doesn't have a drinking fountain. It takes up to a thousand years for water bottles to biodegrade. All the people in my class take one to school and just throw it away everyday. Even the teachers do that! What a bad example they are setting.

Hi!

Today I went to the grocery store. I looked down an aisle dedicated completely to plastic bins! I looked down the next aisle. It was full of fake plastic flowers. I was mortified. The next aisle was filled with plastic clocks. The next one with plastic figurines designed to look like wood. Why not just use wood if you want your plastic to look like wood! Aaahhhhh! As you can see I am frustrated at the way most Americans think of convenience before the planet they live on. On the bright side I have everyone in my grade donating their plastic wrapping to me to make bags! :)

Yay! I have finally completed my plastic wrappings bag. It took all day long! But, it was worth it. I know, it's ugly. Oh, well. I was thinking I could sell them and give the proceeds to an eco-friendly association. What do you think? If you or anyone you know is interested e-mail me at cocosingsong101@gmail.com. If all goes well I think I will sell them for $6. If you know any good eco-friendly associations, let me know! ;)

Today I went to the movies.

Wow! We waste sooooo much plastic on the movies. Packaging, straws, and those stupid plastic things they put on cups. I went and saw the new movie, Megamind (it was really good!) I went with my best friend. Anyways, I wanted to get a soda pop and some snacks. Then, I thought about all the plastic. So, what I ended up doing was getting my soda without a straw or that thing on top. Also, I decided I wold make a purse out of the snack's packaging.

Plastic wrapping never ceases to make me mad.

As I was trick or treating, I thought, boy, how much plastic I am wasting. Really, how many little, individually wrapped candies do I need? I don't even finish it all. Well, that basically ruined my whole night. I was not irritated, just sad. How many people go trick or treating without even thinking once about the appalling amount of plastic we use every Halloween? But, just as I was questioning humanity, Beetlejuice came on! A little chocolate and a good movie always cheers me up. Even if the chocolate is individually wrapped.

P.S. I was Snoopy for Halloween!

Happy Halloween!!!

I love this time of year. Warm, windy, beautiful. But, Halloween poses a problem for me. I went to a Halloween party last night. I went a little crazy playing games and dancing with my friends. I don't know why, but I took a one of those stupid fake plastic fangs... I was doing so well, too! I had taken pencils, backpacks, pillows, DVDs etc. Almost no plastic, but then I went and blew it. I feel so bad. My mom told me to let it go, but I just can't! Speaking of plastic and Halloween, does anyone have an alternative to the candies in wrappers? I can't find anything. On a happier note, I found a really cool car in the parking lot outside a local restaurant. No plastic repair!!
No plastic license plate repair

Dental waste!!!

I know I just talked about this but today I went to the dentist and was appalled! All the plastic! Plastic packaging, plastic toothbrush, plastic case of dental floss with only 4.4 yds. on it, more stupid dental floss on plastic handles, plastic travel toothpastes, and, of course, a plastic bag to hold it all in!!! Also, for presents they hand out plastic toys! I took a pencil for my toy. We need dentists, but we also need the world! If they could just try to be just a little more eco-friendly, what a change it would make.

Today's theme is Styrofoam.

Styrofoam is terrible! It takes more than 5,000 years to biodegrade! I was so upset today because at school we had a tornado warning, so we had indoor recess and lunch in our classrooms. Hot lunch is served on Styrofoam plates that are normally recycled. Well, since we were in our classrooms and not the cafeteria, the platters were not recycled! Everyone just threw them away without a second glance. I had to close my eyes and look away to even muster up enough courage to throw it away. To top it all off, we went to a local ice cream store after school for a snack. Unfortunately, they serve the ice cream in MORE Styrofoam! I feel so guilty. Looking back on it I could have at least washed the bowl and brought it back next time we went for ice cream.

Hi! Today's theme for eliminating plastic is bathroom products.

I have an amazing toothbrush. It is called a "Preserve" toothbrush and is made out of recycled plastic. Also, if you send it back it will be made into other toothbrushes. It is really rather nice and comes in many colors. I have dental floss that is vegan and the container is made of less plastic than other containers. It has 100 yards of floss on it, while other only have 5-50 yards. So it also cuts down on waste! I use "Tom's of Maine" toothpaste. It is organic. It does come in a normal tube, but that is the best I can do. I found all of these things in a heath food store.
