I stopped giving them out to my students (but that was after the year six parents brought cupcakes for the class...imagine! Six cupcakes per person!) And while it seems like an alternative is to make your own candy (which is pretty easy) or other treats, many schools frown upon unpackaged goodies for health and safety reasons :(

So for the past few years, I started giving out pencils. I know, it doesn't sound too exciting, but I work with 5 year olds and they get excited to have a pencil of their very own (just like the kind at school, only they get to keep their pencil in their backpacks). I will even bring colored sharpies to write their names on the pencils.

Another idea takes a bit of planning, but can be used for any holiday. I collect the broken crayons that the teachers at my school would normally throw away at the end of the year. Then, during the summer, I'll melt the crayons down into flexible molds. I found a couple that were heart-shaped muffin molds and I'll melt down the crayon pieces in them, making new (recycled) crayons to give to the kids at school.Ashleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11555211840325397458noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7182166402237265969.post-6536849277315141122010-10-31T02:25:16.429-07:002010-10-31T02:25:16.429-07:00I know how you feel, when the plastic trash washed...I know how you feel, when the plastic trash washed up on my beach last winter I was so good about cutting down on plastic, but then I slacked as the year went on and I forgot about the plastic, and it just happened that the week I decided to finally do Beth's "Show us your plastic challenge" I some how ended up with 43 pieces! What's funny is that I got really busy this week and forgot to save my plastic, but I know I used less than 10 pieces. It's hard to keep up, but you inspire me to get back to it too!Angry Butterflyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14251944020244934205noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7182166402237265969.post-18804283017902554242010-10-30T22:59:26.722-07:002010-10-30T22:59:26.722-07:00Love your site!

All that matters is what you do about it going forward, and know there will still be hiccups in the road. I'm a friend of Beth's and Lisa's...heard about you through Lisa's blog!

I'm thinking we might live near each other...we had a tornado warning the other day too...and my son goes to a nearby dentist that is FAMOUS for all the junk she gives away. Is this a trend among dentists? Hope not!OrganicMania.comhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03268357331026515628noreply@blogger.com
